Automated Trading Journals: ATAS, NinjaTrader, Sierra & MT5
By TradesViz in Auto Import Trades

You can send trades from ATAS, NinjaTrader, Sierra Chart and MetaTrader 5 straight to your TradesViz journal. Install the sync indicator, study or EA for your platform, choose a TradesViz account, and keep it running while you trade. There is no CSV to export after each session.

These integrations also let you record notes from your chart. Depending on the platform, you can attach screenshots, add tags, or save stop-loss and take-profit information. This guide explains what each integration supports and how to use the TradesViz API to build your own indicators and journal tools.

All four integrations run on Windows. The ATAS connector is currently in beta.

What each platform can send to TradesViz

All four connectors send supported trade executions. The differences are in how they collect notes, images and risk information.

The connectors record your trading activity. Saving a stop-loss or target in TradesViz does not place or change an order with your broker.

Set up your trading platform

NinjaTrader: trades, screenshots, notes and tags

In NinjaTrader 8.1, add TradesVizApiSync to one chart for the account you want to journal. That instance captures the account's supported fills across instruments. Use the chart's TV, Notes, SL/TP and Camera controls to connect and add journal entries.

Notes and tags follow your latest captured trade, or you can choose an older trade. For automatic screenshots, keep the indicator's chart tab selected and visible, with an instrument matching the fill. Manual capture is also available. Eligible linked OCO brackets can supply stop-loss and take-profit prices; you can enter those journal prices yourself when a bracket cannot be matched.

Use separate TradesViz destinations for separate NinjaTrader accounts, including copy-trading accounts. Supported instruments include USD stocks, futures and supported index CFDs. Futures need a specific contract expiry. Follow the NinjaTrader trading journal setup guide for downloads and screenshots.

MetaTrader 5: account sync and trade notes

The MT5 integration installs as an Expert Advisor on Windows. Attach it to one chart, allow https://api.tradesviz.com in WebRequest settings, and enter your TradesViz email, Account Secret Key and destination account name. It captures supported trades across the connected broker account.

Click TradesViz: Add note to write about the latest captured trade. Optional screenshots cover recent fills matching the EA chart's symbol. Supported stop-loss and take-profit prices can update your journal's price-based targets. If your journal uses P&L targets, the observed prices are saved as notes instead.

Normal setup starts with positions opened after the connection is established. The EA checks for work every five seconds and sends one queued event per cycle, so several events can take multiple cycles. The MetaTrader 5 trading journal guide explains installation and the log messages to check. This .ex5 file does not run in MT4, mobile or the web terminal.

Sierra Chart: trade sync and day notes

Add the TradesViz Sync study for each account and symbol you want to record. Use the x64 or ARM64 DLL that matches your Sierra executable. The study sends fills available in Sierra and lets you open the journal from TradesViz Add note in the chart menu, or with Ctrl+Shift+N.

Notes go to your UTC day journal. Stop and target observations are also saved as notes, rather than structured SL/TP fields. Capture chart saves a PNG on your computer; upload that file to TradesViz when you want it in your online journal.

Sierra's fill interface supplies zero execution costs to this connector. Add or verify commissions and fees before reviewing net P&L. The Sierra Chart trading journal guide covers installation, account selection, notes and delivery checks.

ATAS: execution sync from your chart

The TradesViz API Sync indicator watches one chart account and instrument. Its settings gear opens the connection panel, where you choose a TradesViz destination and enable sync. The beta supports USD stocks, supported listed futures and linear Binance Futures pairs quoted in USDT or USDC.

Supported continuous futures are mapped to a dated contract using the opening fill's date. That contract stays in use until the position is flat. Where an exact execution link is available, order comments and stop/target observations can be saved as trade notes. You can also send a manual note with an execution ID.

ATAS X has been tested in the application. The classic ATAS build is still available for testing and has not had the same verification. Use the beta under supervision. It retains up to 10,000 fills or 128 MiB per chart and can recover recent fills still available in ATAS's cache. Screenshots and daily-journal import are not included. See the ATAS trading journal guide for both downloads.

Check your first import

Start with a simulation or demo account and a separate TradesViz destination. Complete one trade, then compare its entry, exit, quantity, instrument and costs with the platform. Check a note or screenshot too if you enabled those features.

A ready or connected message means the connector can start capturing. It does not confirm that a trade has reached your journal. Look for the platform's applied or uploaded confirmation, then open the destination account in TradesViz. The setup guides show the relevant messages.

The connectors save captured records for retries after temporary delivery failures. Keep that saved data when troubleshooting. Retrying the same record does not usually create another copy, but a separate broker import or overlapping CSV can still supply the same trade. Choose one import route for each account and date range.

Keep the platform and required chart running during your session. History recovery is limited to what the platform still makes available; it cannot recreate a chart screenshot that was never captured.

Use the journal to review your trading

Once the imports are working, you can review trades by account, symbol and time period in TradesViz. Read your trade and day notes alongside the results. Keep simulated trading separate from live trading, and check costs before comparing net performance.

For example, filter a week's futures trades and look at the exits. Did you close early because the setup changed, or because you were uncomfortable with the open profit? A note written at the time and a chart image can help answer that. For a forex account, compare the trades behind a losing session before deciding that the entry method needs to change.

Win rate, average win and loss, profit factor and drawdown tell you what happened across a group of trades. The individual records help you work out why. Automatic imports give you more time for that review and less data to enter by hand.

Build your own indicators with the TradesViz API

All four integrations use TradesViz's API in the backend. You can also use the documented public API to build an indicator, import script, report or analysis tool of your own.

An indicator could record the setup you identified as a trade note. A Python script could retrieve trades for a weekly report, or add a tag after you review a trade. If you need a different platform connection, check the execution-import documentation to see whether its instruments and data fit the supported formats.

Start in the API documentation, then create a key in your API/MCP dashboard. Give it access only to the accounts and operations it needs. This public REST API key is separate from the Account Secret Key used by the built-in connectors.

List your accounts with Python

This read-only example uses Python's standard library. Set TRADESVIZ_API_KEY in your environment with a key that has the documented read permission:

import json
import os
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen

request = Request(
    "https://www.tradesviz.com/api/v2/accounts",
    headers={
        "Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["TRADESVIZ_API_KEY"],
        "Accept": "application/json",
    },
)
with urlopen(request, timeout=30) as response:
    print(json.dumps(json.load(response), indent=2))

Use the returned account references for your next query. When you add writes, follow the documented preparation and confirmation steps, keep retry identifiers where required, and check the final status. Handle errors, pagination and rate limits before leaving a script running unattended. Keep the key out of published source code and screenshots.

Check the public execution-import documentation for supported assets and operations. The public API does not automatically expose every feature of a built-in connector, including its screenshot handling. Our API and MCP guide also covers reports, notes and other ways to work with your journal.

The NinjaTrader, MT5 and Sierra connectors retain their restrictions on syncing automated trading systems or bots. Building a custom journal tool does not change those rules. Journal automation records and analyzes trades; it does not submit broker orders.
