Best Exit

A simulation answering 'what if you moved the last execution around a little bit further in time?' while respecting your stop loss constraints.

Formula

Best Exit PnL = Max simulated PnL where Drawdown ≤ Realized MAE (stop loss respected)

More Details

What is Best Exit?

Best Exit is a proven way to analyze IF you cut your profits too soon. The saying "let your winners run" and "cut your losers" assumes traders have foresight or a crystal ball. Since neither exists, we rely on data and past experience.

The Simulation Logic

Best Exit simulates: What if you moved the last execution around a little bit further in time? Would you have earned more? Would you have lost?

Important: Best Exit respects your risk constraints. The simulation assumes you would have stopped out if price dropped below your realized MAE (your actual stop loss level). This makes the analysis realistic rather than pure hindsight.

Three Types of Exit Analysis

1. Best Exit

Simulates moving the exit time forward to find the optimal exit point within the trade session.

2. EOD Exit (End of Day)

What if you exited at the end of the trading day? Compares your actual exit to holding until market close.

3. Multi-Timeframe Exit

What if you exited at precise time intervals from entry?
- 5 minutes from entry
- 2 hours from entry
- 3 days from entry
- And more

Exit Efficiency

Exit Efficiency = (Realized PnL / Best Exit PnL) x 100

Efficiency Meaning
70-80% Excellent capture
50-70% Good
Below 30% Exiting too early, panic selling

Best Exit Time Analysis

If your best exit consistently occurs 30-60 minutes after your actual exit, you have a patience problem. Use this data to adjust your exit strategy.

Where to find it in TradesViz

Performance Metrics > Best Exit / EOD Exit tab shows Best Exit analysis. Individual trade pages display Best Exit PnL, EOD Exit PnL, and multi-timeframe exit simulations. More info: /blog/exit-analysis-charts/

Example

Realized PnL of 100 vs Best Exit PnL of 200 gives 50% Exit Efficiency.
