More Details

What is Relative Volume?

Relative Volume in TradesViz refers to the volume of the underlying at the time of your trade. For example, if you opened a position at 10:00 AM, TradesViz captures the volume of that specific 1-minute, 5-minute, 15-minute, 30-minute, 1-hour, or 1-day bar.

This is NOT the same as your traded volume (shares/contracts). It's the market's volume at the moment you entered.

Why Relative Volume Matters

ATR, volatility, and volume are interconnected. High volatility requires high volume (lots of buying/selling). By correlating the market's volume at trade entry with your performance, you discover:

  • Do you perform better in high-volume conditions?
  • Should you avoid low-volume sessions?
  • What volume ranges suit your trading style?

Timeframes Available

Timeframe Use Case
1-minute Scalpers, precise timing
5-minute Day traders
15-minute Intraday swings
30-minute Session analysis
1-hour Broader context
1-day Daily volume comparison

TradesViz Relative Volume Charts

Performance Metrics & Ratios > Relative Volume Analysis provides 7 charts:

  • Aggregate PnL vs Relative Volume Range
  • Wins/Losses vs Relative Volume Range
  • Reward/Risk Ratio vs Relative Volume Range
  • R-value vs Relative Volume Range
  • Profit Factor vs Relative Volume Range
  • Expectancy Ratio vs Relative Volume Range
  • Hit Ratio (%) vs Relative Volume Range

Best Practices

  1. Filter by symbol or asset type: Comparing penny stocks (vol < 5k) with large caps (vol in 100k's) in the same chart is not meaningful.
  2. Choose appropriate timeframe: 1-day shows millions, 1-minute shows thousands.
  3. Use custom bin ranges: The default fixed ranges may group your data into just 2 bins. Use 15+ custom bins for finer analysis.

For Derivatives

For options and futures, TradesViz uses the underlying's volume. AAPL options use AAPL stock volume. ES futures use ES volume.

Where to find it in TradesViz

Performance Metrics & Ratios > Relative Volume Analysis tab. Select timeframe (1-min to 1-day) at the top. 7 charts correlate your PnL, Win Rate, R-value, Profit Factor, Expectancy, and Hit Ratio against market volume at trade time. Use global filters for specific symbols.

Example

At 10:00 AM trade entry, the 5-minute bar shows 329,000 volume. This is the relative volume for that trade.
